My Concept Board (Dada Movement)

My Concept Board

My assignment for class was to create a concept board on a designer or design movement and I chose to Dada Movement

The Dada movement  was a movement in both art and literature in the 1910s in Zurich, Switzerland. It was created as an opposition to World War I due to the amount of factors that contributed to the war such as nationalism and rationalism. The movement was influenced by avant gardes such as Cubism and Expressionism and in turn created a movement with a wildly diverse mediums from poetry to painting. Many Dada artists in fact claims their work was a wake up call for modern art.
"What this means is that they were generally in opposition to everything art stood for. They ignored aesthetics. They affronted sensibilities. In all, their thoughts concerning traditional culture were also thoughts of destruction." The artists that had ran off to Switzerland during the World War I was angry with modern society so they focused their anger through art. They began to create art that was seen as gross or horrific such as the fountain and the mustache on Mona Lisa. Slowly this movement spread through the world before dissolving in the 1920s. It was a protest movement that did not favor just one mediums and was humorous, sarcastic, colorful and quite quirky in a sense. It made people rethink their modern society.

Dada did not constitute an actual movement but instead taught the art world to be spontaneous and take chances by straying from traditions. It’s legacy can be found through not just art but through literature as people continue to allow their imagination to break through the boundaries of what is considered the norm. It impacted graphic design with its unique use of not only words but images whether it is simply throwing images randomly or words on a page. Like dada, graphic design is used to communicate a message. Even though the Dada movement was a movement of protest, graphic design had taken aspect of it to incorporate in the way certain images to reach out to the human consciousness.

Some quotes:

'Dada means nothing. We want to change the world with nothing.'
--Richard Huelsenbeck'

Art is dead. Long live Dada.'
--Walter Serner

'Dada talks with you, it is everything, it includes everything, it belongs to all religions, can be neither victory nor defeat, it lives in space and not in time.'
--Francis Picabia

'Dada is like your hopes: nothing
like your paradise: nothing
like your idols: nothing
like your heroes: nothing
like your artists: nothing
like your religions: nothing'
--Francis Picabia
